Fear or Trust
October 13th, 2008 Posted in GeneralYears ago as a young 26 year old entrepreneur in Atlanta I was invited to speak at an event where President Clinton was also speaking. As people mingled back stage I’ll never forget watching him as he put his hand on the shoulder of the Governor and said, “It’s all about psychology. You need to understand the psychology of the voters. It’s all about psychology.” Not surprisingly Clinton and his team came up with the famous phrase, “It’s the Economy Stupid.” They understood that psychology drives elections and the economy.
Fast forward to today, it’s no wonder the financial markets continue to spiral downward. The 24/7 media is creating a frenzy of panic and fear that is negatively impacting the collective psychology of the country. I have heard from many people who are more stressed and fearful than they have ever been in their life. And like a horror movie where the things you fear start to appear, our collective fear is making our worst nightmare come true.
We need to realize that the economy is not some abstract entity separate from us. The economy is us. YOU and I are the economy. Our thoughts, behaviors, actions and mood collectively create the economy. Government can try to manipulate our actions through tax plans, regulations, incentives, etc. but in a nutshell WE are the economy. Our collective mood, productivity, innovation, positive energy and execution determines whether the economy is thriving or in a recession. Paying our mortgage helps the economy. Working hard helps the economy. Starting a business helps the economy. Making a product the world needs helps the economy. Replacing our psychology of fear with a psychology of trust helps the economy.
But how can I trust anything, you might ask, when everything I’ve trusted in is falling apart. My answer is that we’ve put our trust and faith in the wrong things. Our government, media, financial institutions and our own actions have shown us that a house built on a foundation of greed cannot stand. The cracks have been exposed and it’s a wake up call to all of us. As Charles West said, “We turn to God for help when our foundations are shaking, only to learn that it is God who is shaking them.” Our foundations are shaking for a reason. We are meant to realize that security is an illusion. There’s no power in having a big bank account. You can’t find peace in your investment portfolio and you’ll never find your true purpose in your 401k plan.
We are meant to stop listening to the media, aka, Chicken Little and have faith in something bigger than ourselves. We are meant to trust in God, not in our balance sheets. We are meant to realize that true power exists not in what seems big and strong and secure but in what is silent and unseen. This is where faith lives.
So instead of starting your morning by turning on the news, consider taking a walk of prayer. Instead of looking down at the paper, look up to the heavens. And instead of listening to the fear mongers, walk outside, close your eyes, smell the fresh autumn air, take a few deep breaths and discover the real peace you seek. Every day, stay positive, do your best to succeed and have faith in a brighter and better future. I believe this is the antidote to fear and it is the true kind of trust that you, me and the economy need right now.
Are you going to live in fear or trust? Share your feedback here.
Stay Positive!

Jon, that is the most succinct and accurate description I’ve read so far about the state of the Earth’s energy. Thank you for putting your thoughts into words for the world to absorb.

Again it is amazing just how the universe supplies exactly what I needed. I am running late this am, did not get my daily walk in, opened my email to find this \”christians unite\” email forwarded from a friend which was nothing more than a violent rally call about the presidential race. I was so upset my heart started racing. How do I combat this type of retoric? Then your wonderful wkly newletter showed up! My perfect answer espeically since the friend sent all the addresses with the forward! I send them all your words & the link to get more asking them to unite in this type of prayer! I hope it opens the eyes & hearts of everyone who reads it. Thanks again

i have faith that the universe will provide and i stick to that faith keep the positive energy going
By Patty Walters on Oct 13, 2008
YES!!!! Jon you are so right on — there is nothing outside of ourselves — trust, security, faith — we have it! The things happening outside of ourselves ARE totally a reflection of what we have believed and of course the actions associated with the beliefs. It is our wakeup call. Thanks for the message!

You are SO right.
I am feeling the same anxiety as everyone else, it is dificult to avoid it when family members run the TV constantly. But I am refusing to listen to it any more. I remove myself to the kitchen and watch Christian TV or I turn off all the externals and fill my mind with the Word of God. That takes practice and it all comes down to how much time and energy I have and whatI want to give my time and energy towards. That covers both physical and mental activity. I also believe that if we know it is God shaking the insitutions of this world that we have trusted in more than we have Him, then no matter how it shakes, my hope is not built on the economy of this world but on the economy of God, and His Word is unshakeable.
A teacher I know has a plaque in her classroom. It says: “NO SNIVELING”. So let us kep on giving thanks for what we do have.
By D. Schofield on Oct 13, 2008
I really resonated with your message today.
We are *not* to put our trust in earthly foundations and institutions.
And we *are* the economy, in the same way that if you peeled the lid off a company (like a sardine can) and looked inside, you’d see a bunch of squirming pink things…people!
Paradoxically we are both the problem and the instruments of solution.
Psalms 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation–
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life–
of whom shall I be afraid?
So I’m going to sow in a time of famine and grow my business. See you at the top!
FULL SPEED AHEAD!

Here is something I wrote years ago:
Are we teaching our children fear or trust?
I talked about goal setting last time. In moving forward through your life gracefully I must mention trust. Are we acting in and teaching our children fear or trust? To be afraid or to be content?
When my oldest child Brett was a toddler, I was moving from North Carolina to Virginia, six hours away. There were many house hunting expeditions and my husband was already working there. So, Brett and I would travel alone. I was heading back late one night to meet the movers in the morning and there was a terrible fog. Crossing the Blue Ridge Mountains, there were reflectors in the middle of the road. I was moving slowly going from reflector to reflector.
I have noticed my life like that many times. When I didn’t know what I should do usually one thing would be clear so I would do that one. Then I would discover something else I could do. Sometimes that is the way life will move us - just one step at a time. Do something and wait, the next thing will become clearer.
That was hard enough. Back on the mountain road the fog became worse. It was so bad for a while that I could only see one reflector and as it came up next to the car and out of view, the next one was still not visible. I knew I could trust I was headed in the right direction and moved gently forward. When I did, the next reflector would come into sight. And again, as I moved forward into the unknown, the next would appear, showing me I was going in the right direction.
There are gentle reminders for us if we will look and listen. Do you take the time to get still to listen? Do you tell God “you never speak to me?” He is always with you but many times we are so busy, so distracted we are not entering the stillness to be able to hear Him.
My youngest, Joshua, when he was little, used to wish us a “Happy New Ear.” I used to think it was a cute mistake, but maybe it’s an inspiration. Maybe we all could use ‘new ears’. In your life, are you listening? And then, are you acting and verbalizing your trust in the Lord? Are you anxious and afraid? Or are you joyful and peaceful, entrusting your time here to God?
The children are watching and learning from you.

What a timely message! Cynthis Heald in “A Woman’s Journey to the Heart of God,” writes,
“Although it seems safe and logical to be in charge or your life, being in charge becomes a heavy, lonely responsiblity. Your Father graciously offers to take your life, protect you, strengthen you, and comfort you on your journey. You need not fear relinquishment, for it leads to freedom, security, and the real you.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Just wanted to say \”Amen\” to this week\’s message about fear and the economy. I know people my age, 40\’s, who pulled their retirement money out of mutual funds and put it into a bank savings account. True, they\’re safer but when our retirement comes around I still feel I\’ll have alot more options. Thanks for the reminder that we can choose whether or not to join the Chicken Littles of the world!

I’ve already been through a tough year and am actually starting to feel the relief that some “downsizing” can bring. But it still hurts to see others going through the horror and sense of betrayal I went through last year.
Three things have helped keep me from drowning in panic and self pity. 1) My Grandparents - thinking of the wars and depression they went through reminds me that we can get through this far more easily. 2) Other people - When I swallow my pride and admit I’m struggling, it’s been amazing to see how many others are going through the same thing and are willing to help. 3) The REAL world - So much of the world still lives on less than $2.00 a day. We may have challenges, but we have opportunities to dig our selves out that so many only dream of. (I wish “Reality Television” would
show more of this - not millionaire socialites!) I only hope these challenges raise our compassion and efforts to help ourselves and others instead of choke and drown in fear.

Jon,
Thank you so much for your newsletter I received this morning. I can’t tell you how much I agree with it. I am one of those people who doesn’t watch the news or read the papers because of all the negative energy it breeds. I figure if something catastrophic happens I will find out about it. Well case and point. I’m aware of all the issues going on in the financial market right now. My feelings are that the media, as usual, is causing so much more hype and fear in Americans than needs to be there. Now don’t get me wrong I know this is a serious issue but the market is cyclical. It will rebound. It always does. I believe that we need to stop focusing on how dire this situation is and focus on the awesome greatness that we have in our lives and it will rebound a lot quicker. My viewpoint is just ride it out and keep plugging away at what you’re doing. Have a positive outlook, an attitude of abundance and positive expectancy and that is what you will receive.
Thanks Jon for the reminder!! You rock!

That is the BEST advice I have heard in a long time! BUT I do not thing most people will follow that advice, unfortunately. I know for sure that God is the only one we can really trust, and that makes me happy. I know that God will bring about peace and security on this earth, very soon!

Jon - my wife works at UNF and forwards some of your e-newsletters to me.
I think you are right about the negative, alarmist bias of the media. I look for facts. That to me is the news, not their opinions (I usually make an exception for the WSJ).
However, I do like what Admiral Stockdale used to say. He said the key is to be able to face the brutal reality of a situation, without ever losing the belief that in the end, you will prevail.
By Colleen Herman on Oct 13, 2008
I agree with your thoughts. You put them into words so beautifully. It is about being in the moment and thanking God for each and every one.
By Mike Hanes on Oct 13, 2008
I agree totally that we need to put our total trust in God, not the economy. I choose not to participate in the bad economy! I think we need to pray for our leaders and not listen to the media. The media does try to create self fullfilling prophecies, but we do not have to allow them to put fear into us. The only reason they do it is that fear sells, which is very sad. We have not been given a spirit of fear.
By Bob Salstrand on Oct 13, 2008
Jon,
This note was one of the best you’ve written. Life is to short to focus on only one thing that effects that life. Pray, but not in fear but in praise. We are still driving our Bus!

Thanks Jon for a great message today. I heard a wise man say just this last week, “Faith is not just a feeling, it is a choice” When we have times of fear or worry we need to choose faith. Thanks for helping me do that with your great post today.

People have to make the personal decision not to be afraid.

I never listen to the financial news these days cos we’re not hearing the news as such. We are being give various pundits views on the news instead. Its when anything big happens - five minutes telling you about the event, then weeks of pure guesswork put out to the listening public as fact.
Gave up listening to the scaremongering a long time ago.
If something good in the way that fatcats are no longer rewarded on resignation when it all goes wrong, I will be happy. Plus if Gordon Brown can bring some semblance of order to the markets, then ok, he still doesn’t get my vote but he’s not a bad lad at heart.

Oh I love the idea that God is the one shaking our foundations!
How else in these times are we supposed to grow and evolve? The very sense of what is secure must be challenged so we keep growing as humans. Everything we give value to - including the media - needs to be questioned and asked: what value do you REALLY give to ME. Our kids and teenagers are being bombarded by more and more media imagery and unrealistic media expectations each day and they need to ask: what value does that magazine, website, tv ad etc give to me? And where and how do I feel valuable?
Hopefully people will start to understand that they INDIVIDUALLY and as COMMUNITIES are the ones who create value in their lives. Let’s get back to what Jon teaches - WE are the ones who give our lives precious value, meaning and joy!
By Stacie on Oct 13, 2008
I loved your message, today. We were just talking in our 7am AA meeting about finances, and how God is our employer not the media. Stop listening to the news; reading the paper for awhile. If I focus on today everything is fine. I’ve invested well; I’m diversified; and I can get a job anywhere if needed…meaning I can make money somewhere if it comes to that. We also talked about the attitude of gratitude, and you can’t be stressed if your thankful. Each day we should all make a mental or physical note of 5 things were grateful for. When I do that everything gets put back into perspective.

I am living in trust.” God giveth and He taketh away, blessed be his name.”Those are the words of Job who lost everything that was dear to him, even his family and yet he still kept faith that God was in control. A little refocusing of my priorities is just what I have needed. I have been spending like money was water and all that has gotten me is a house full of stuff that I have no use for anymore, and a mound of debt. I am guilty of filling up the dumps with stuff that I have no use for and turning around and buying more stuff. As a society, we have been so fixated on stuff that we are willing to put our health at risk so we can buy our stuff cheaper. Look at all the recalls from chinese products that are made with cheap labor but no regulations. Look at the produce from Mexico that is infested with pesticides banned from use in the US. Are we so desperate for stuff that we are willing to put ourselves at risk? Our children are suffering from lack of parenting. Mom is forced to work now to afford living and more stuff! Families are torn apart by divorce due to the stress of working so much and not allowing time to nurture the most precious things in life, their spouse and kids. No one ever laid on their dying bed and regretted not having more money or stuff! Most people regret the lost time with their loved ones.
So,yes I am going to trust that God has a plan to point me in the right direction,my family and friends.

Great message… choosing optimism, active possibility and effective action over fear, resignation and inaction in times when we are definitely getting a message that the way things have been done is no longer effective or useful. I think about it as a message from the universe… no matter what your higher power, now is the time to trust that there is a different way to do things. Loving your simple messages Jon… they are great reminders and provide an easy way to discuss these things with others. I’ll definitely be forwarding today’s e-mail on! JC Melbourne, Australia

A Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce example of how WE are the economy:
1) Referred to Chamber member to do my logo.
2) That member refers me to another firm.
3) That firm’s referral winds up as a client.
4) With that client’s revenue, I put my logo on shirts–yes, done by another chamber member.
5) In turn, I refer that firm to one of my clients who picks up a specialized part of their business.

Jon, thank you for such an impeccable synopsis. You have a thumb on the pulse of what’s driving untold millions into a panic situation. This nation was built with strong Christian and a Faith value. God is clearly evidenced in the founding documents. Politics, media, unethical business, and those who want “Under God” removed. Its time we all strike back and tell them what we “the economy” want. Your message just might get people to wake up and vote responsibly Nov 4th, not emotionally as the media are hoping for.

I very much enjoyed your article about living in Fear or Trust. I too believe this is a choice as so many things happen in life which we can not control. 6 years ago I was diagnosed with a brain tumor and epilepsy. The dastard thing still lives in my brain and in truth, has probably been there all my life. It does not grow, and therefore will not need to be operated on. One lady asked me how I could possibly go on with my daily life, to which I responded with one simple word: faith. I have faith that everything that happens in my life is part of the grand plan… perhaps it is not for my benefit but someone else’s. Perhaps I will never discover that grand plan. Or perhaps I will. But my faith guides me through everything… every difficult time I have ever had in my life. It is this faith I wish for every person on this planet.
I personally choose trust. Thank you for your well-written article. I hope to hear more from you.

My sentiments exactly….We must trust God and realize all things are possible through Christ Jesus. America has become a country of greed and absolutely no morals. It is time to restore wholesome living into America. This is the time to use our mind to think positively about the state of our country. If we begin to focus on what is good and strive to make it better, it will come to pass. God is waiting for us to invite Him back into our lives and the United States of America.

Jon - Thank you, Thank you for putting into clear, concise words what I am feeling in my heart. I have turned off the news, stop reading newspaper unless I can listen or impartially and unemotionally to what is being said. I believe those of us who are living in faith and trust that tomorrow is another, brighter day, need also to know what is in reality happening today. We need to pray for guidance and discernment in our thoughts and actions. We need to do those things that are for the highest good of all concerned — not just the investors, stockholders, or our personal interests.
The more we as individuals replace fear with trust and hope — the better the world will be.
Blessings and light to you!

If we are able to define God as that which is infinite, present in all things as all things (including you and me), then the recipe for unprecented prosperity actually appears on the back of the dollar bill - “In God We Trust” and E. Pluribus Unum - “Out of the many, One.”
Who knew the dollar bill comes with instructions on the back!

Your words emailed to me by a friend is exactly what I needed to hear. I am so afraid of this election and who is going to win. I keep saying that if he wins we are all going to hell in a hand basket for what he is going to do to our country.
I can’t thank you enough for putting things in the perspective that I know that they should be in and have always believed that they should be. I just needed a reminder because this fear that you talked about overtook my reason and my faith.
Thank you again,
Jonna R. Jones

I feel so tired of my work at an IT company, I almost have to work over time every day.And some time, I even want to give up my job for a good rest or something vacation. But now, I think over some diference about my work and life, and I feel better than befor. I get the energy from my heart, I become a power man.
What happen, because of you!

Jon,
Excellent! I have ‘preached’ the same. I wish we had a day without TV, a day with the newspapers and a day to raise the vibration of our society by only speaking, thinking and acting upon positivity. Just one day. And I believe that one day would extend into two, and that in turn to three, etc. One day to make a change. One day to make a difference. One day to live in the positive!
Love and Laughter,
Kristy Robinett

Thank you for this wonderful article, Jon. I have sent it on to family and friends. My niece wrote back thanking me for it and has joined your list of enewsletter folks. I am right with you on where we much place our trust, our Creator, and that we need to take responsiblities on how we live our life which does collectively create the kind of world we live in. I love life, Jon, all of it. It is such a delicious gift. I teach a beautiful form of yoga, DRU Yoga, and it takes me right to that place within where I can be still, loving, calm, yet fully engaged in life and serving people. It doesn’t blind me to the loneliness, fear, suffering of people. It gives me a way to hold it all with love, even when things are tough. I can tell that you love the work you do, Jon, and I thank you for it.

Dear Jon:
Enjoyed your post on “Fear or Trust.” I’m walking in trust. In GOD we trust. Amazing that our Founding Fathers clearly knew that. BUT, we live in a society where there is a move to take God out of everything. It’s called political correctness which overall I can appreciate pieces of it. In this case, however, I guess it is God who is having the last laugh!

Remember, that knowledge is power! Those Democrats in Congress, both House & Senate, do not understand US history, going back to the days of FDR, from 1932-1945. He did not live to see the results that our military completed in Japan & Europe.
Ask any ex-military man. They all know that WWII got us out of the Great Depression, not govt. control (socialism)! Most of those state & federal programs are still in existence today bkz Roosevelt put no time limits on the programs. That means we are still paying for them.
This is also why we still have illegal immigrants in the United States, getting benefits, including citizenship, under the Democratic leadership, that should have been eliminated. Lyndon B. Johnson didn’t & was the one who should have done so.
Now, the Democrats use the Mexicans as their voter base. (Read about it in Dick Morris’ book, Because He Could & other books, Outrage & Fleeced.) That & other illegal means were used to get Clinton re-elected a 2nd term, the do-nothing President.
Whenever the military has been downsized, during Carter & Clinton’s administration, we have had an economic slowdown & higher taxes. Clinton had capital gains at 38.9% George W. Bush lowered it to 15%. He & his father understood business, economics, capitalism, aka., free enterprise.
Both Bushs’ had wonderful relationships with foreign countries, including China & Russia, (who actually feared the USA)& would not bow to Saudi Arabian leadership, give Chavez, N. Korea, Iraq or Iran appeasement, or apologe for our military strength.
Talking to a “bully,” aka., a “terrorist,” is not the way the military deals with an enemy. Equal force against them is the only way they fear us!
Watch FOX news, especially the ticker tape below the tv screen. A lot of factual info that is not televised is there, too. Most of it is true, versus the “drive-by media,” as Rush Limbaugh terms the left wingers & Hollywood, who have no clue what the truh really is. They will when they are paying 52% tax rates on their busiess & can’t sell their 7 million & higher homes, as well as when a bomb or IED (improvised explosive device) lands in their living area.
