Dealing with Adversity
After last Monday night’s football game I was feeling down. The Jacksonville Jaguars, in front of a national audience and millions of viewers, played one of their worst games ever. Some friends called me to say “the bus” got a flat tire or even worse, "the bus” crashed. The next day a friend called me and told me that the Jaguars all-star running back, Maurice Drew, was on a radio show talking about “The Energy Bus” and how they have to stay positive through their adversity and keep moving forward in a positive direction. I was encouraged.
The next day I heard of the devastation caused by the California fires and learned that a friend and fellow author and his wife had lost their home in the fire. They were in great spirits in spite of losing everything.
That same day I talked to my neighbor while walking around my block. She’s been fighting cancer and yet was laughing and smiling while we talked. Then a few hours later I met a Florida real estate agent who called the current housing situation, an opportunistic market rather than a challenging market.
I couldn’t help but think about all the adversity so many of us seem to be facing today. Whether it’s the loss of a home, job, loved one or personal health, everywhere you turn someone is dealing with something. Adversity certainly comes in many different forms and severity levels (I know there is a big difference between losing a football game and your home) and hits each of us differently. The tests are different but I believe the answer is the same.
Our positive energy must be greater than any adversity. Our trust and faith must be greater than any obstacle. Our bus will surely get an occasional flat tire, or worse... crash, on our journey through life. And when this happens we must stay positive through the adversity, pick up the pieces, put the bus back together and keep moving forward. We must maintain a positive perspective and a positive vision for the road ahead.
I’m not saying this is easy to do. But I believe when we consider the alternative, it’s our only choice. We can focus on the past or look to the future. We can let negativity bring us down or allow hope to lift us up. And when we think about the future we can embody the spirit of the Phoenix, who rose from the ashes, reborn, renewed and reenergized. Just as the people of Atlanta who watched their city be burned to the ground chose the Phoenix to symbolize their commitment, passion and determination to rebuild their city, we too can embody this same spirit to rebuild with positive energy, with hope, optimism and trust. If others can get back on the bus with a smile on their face and hope in their heart then so can we. We will always experience adversity in our life. And positive energy will always see us through.
