It's All Good
Last week I told you about a friend who lost his house in the California fires. Well that friend is Ken Blanchard, the author of “The One Minute Manager" and one of the most amazing people with the purest heart I have ever known. Ken has enjoyed incredible success and prosperity as a writer, speaker and leadership expert. One could say Ken has been very blessed and yet in one moment he went from having it all to being homeless.
Many people would call this a bad event, a tragedy, and it most certainly is, but it’s not the end of the story. You see over the last week Ken has shared his story, positive spirit and faith on the Larry King show, on radio stations, podcasts and at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church. As a result, millions of people have benefited and drawn courage and strength from Ken’s words.
Ken’s situation underscores a belief that I have that all things lead to GOOD. I believe God uses everything for Good.
We see it all the time. Out of tragedy emerges the power of the human spirit. Out of struggle we find the strength, courage and faith to move on. Out of our challenges we find the compassion to help others. And out of suffering we hear a voice like Ken’s that calms us and inspires us to think and live like him. We say to ourselves, “If he can take on this challenge with such faith, then so too can I take on my challenges.” Out of bad emerges GOOD. The research appears to support this.
The Gallup Organization conducted a poll asking people what was the worst thing that ever happened to them. Then the pollsters asked the same people what was the best thing that ever happened to them. The surveyors found an 80% correlation between the worst and best experiences. There’s also a British study of 400 people who supposedly lived “charmed” lives. To the outside world these people had it all and nothing bad ever happened to them. What researchers found was that it wasn't that bad things didn't happen to them, but rather, when bad fortune struck they turned it into good. Eventually it all became good.
We know that we can never stop bad things from happening but we can be like Ken and turn our bad into Good. While at the time we may not see the lesson or the bigger plan, with trust we must maintain that all is good and all will lead to good. A job loss today leads to a dream job tomorrow. A mistake turns into career growth and a promotion. The betrayal that would have destroyed us makes us stronger and happier. The failed business deal is transformed into knowledge and a bigger and better deal a year from now. And a famous author losing his home in a fire turns into a testimony of faith that benefits millions.
Everything leads to GOOD.
