Plan Now for a Great 2008
How are you feeling? Overworked? Overtired? Overstressed? Are you cruising into 2008 or do you feel like your wheels are falling off, your gas tank is on empty and you’re in desperate need of a pit stop? If you are too tired to yell the words “pit stop” you are not alone. In a recent Harris Interactive survey only 15% said they were energized by their jobs and 42% said they were burned out. How about your team? Are they on or off “the bus?” Do you have a shared vision, purpose and direction?
In this spirit I’d like to invite you on “The Energy Bus” where you’ll discover a roadmap for positive change and success. Now is the time to start planning for an amazing and successful ride in 2008. Here are some tips to take your career and team to the next level.
1. Develop a Vision for the Road Ahead and Invite Your Team on “The Bus” - Create a year end meeting or beginning of the year meeting in January where you identify, develop and share your vision for the road ahead. What’s the big vision? What are your goals? What are you moving and striving towards. The destination is success but what does it look like from your vantage point?
2. Identify the Road Blocks - Make a list of the obstacles you faced this year. Why and how did they slow you down? Create a plan to help you navigate and overcome these road blocks in 2008. Also identify potential road blocks for the coming year and create a plan to deal with them.
3. Drive with a Shared Focus and Purpose - It’s important to get your team on “the bus” and aligned and focused in the same direction. A number of companies and sales teams are reading “The Energy Bus” and bringing me in to speak to accomplish this. Something special happens when a team reads this book together. It’s as if everyone starts speaking the same language and works with more focus, spirit and purpose.
4. Fuel the Ride with Positive Energy - There’s no doubt that your people are tired. They might feel like they’ve been beaten up all year. They need to be recharged, refocused and reenergized. They don’t just need motivation and inspiration but practical strategies to refuel themselves. They need the kind of positive energy that will help them deal with adversity, roadblocks, energy vampires and negativity. Make sure you make your people your priority. Fuel them and they will help you create results.
5. Create Your Road Map - Each member of your team should create a road map or action plan for 2008. It’s important to write this plan down and read it every day. This plan will include your vision, goals, action steps, zoom focus, roadblocks, team building and purpose. In the back of “The Energy Bus” you will find this action plan.
The best part of using these tips and going through this process is that it will actually refuel you as you reach the end of the year. Instead of dreading the end of the quarter you will learn from the past and look forward to a new year, a new vision and a new beginning.
