The Power of a Vision

A year ago my dad was hospitalized with a rare blood disease. Doctors said that it was unlikely for a man his age to survive it. All the experts at the hospital thought he was a goner. It was a very scary and sad time for him and our whole family. We had already lost my mom eight years ago to cancer and didn't want to lose him too.

Before I went to visit him I walked to the beach near my house and sent him a video I made of the ocean in front of his favorite place to visit, The Ponte Vedra Lodge and Club. In the video I said, "Dad, if you make it out of the hospital this ocean and beach is waiting for you. I am going to pay for you and Elaine (his girlfriend but they are like husband and wife) to stay at the lodge for a week."

I drove down to South Florida to visit him in the hospital shortly after that. The prognosis still wasn't good and the news got worse. A few hours after I arrived his colon ruptured and they frantically prepped him for emergency surgery. So now he was dealing with a rare blood disease and a ruptured colon.

As they wheeled him away to the emergency room he yelled, "I'll see you on the other side!"
I ran to him and said, "Dad you can't think that way. Do you want to come back? Do you want to live?"

He said, "Yeah. I want to come to the beach for a week and stay at the Lodge."

I said, "Great. Then you are going to make it!"

He survived the surgery, survived the rare blood disease and now a year later his doctors call him a walking miracle.

Last week he came to visit and stayed at The Lodge. I joked with him that when I made the offer I didn't think he was going to make it. But seriously we both know it was the best gift I could have given him.

I didn't know what I was doing at the time but looking back I realize I was giving him a vision for the future, something to hope for and something to look forward to.

We all need a vision that keeps us going. If you don't have one I want to encourage you to create one. If you can see it you can create it. If you have a vision then you also have the power to make it happen.

Here he is a year later with Elaine enjoying the beach at the spot where I made the video.

Dad

Art of Positive Leadership

bookNothing fully prepares one for service in a combat zone. When John Michel was selected to command the NATO Air Training Command Afghanistan and the 438th Air Expeditionary Wing in Kabul, he had almost a quarter century of uniformed service to prepare him for this dynamic assignment. Dynamic because the mission would be to develop an independent, self-sustaining Afghan Air Force... in an active war zone. His new book, The Art of Positive Leadership, is a collection of the most important lessons he learned. Lessons which anyone, be it a parent, pastor, politician, soldier, teacher, or office teammate, can use to begin transforming ordinary interactions into powerful, positive experiences. War zone not required.
